About Me

Sonia Hong is a Toronto-based award-winning director who has been in the film and new media industry for over 15 years. Passionate about representation in media and the potential it has to produce revelatory storytelling by highlighting divergent voices, Sonia’s work often explores themes of gender identity and empowerment. Their short films have been recognised at festivals including the Toronto Urban Film Festival, Reel Asian Film Festival and the Inside Out LGBT Film Festival.

They are dedicated to sharing their skills and ensuring they create opportunities for other queer biopic folks. They have been a mentor as part of Reel Asian Film Festival’s Unsung voices, a speaker  for Asian Heritage Month touring around High schools, as well as a judge, part of the Canadian Jury for the Inside Out Film Festival.

In addition to their work in film, Sonia has made a career in new media, skillfully leveraging emerging technologies to tell the kinds of stories seen by millions of people. Recent highlights include the Mr. Beast Creator Games and the launch of Cardi B’s WAP — projects that not only garnered millions of views but also broke YouTube’s streaming records.
